Curriculum & Courses

Main Lesson Blocks
The core subjects of Science, Social Studies and English Language Arts (ELA) will be taught through teacher-led instruction in daily 2-hour, Waldorf-style Main Lesson Blocks. Students will rotate through 8, four-week topic blocks per year with their same-grade peers.

Electives, Projects & More
On a monthly basis, students can choose from three options to end their day: Projects, Movement, or Workshops.
In Projects, students utilize a formalized project process to complete independent projects of their own choosing. Students also have the opportunity to complete projects outside of school for credit.
A variety of seasonal options are available for students who sign up for Movement. These include biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, gardening, and more.
A rotation of month-long workshops are available to students throughout the year, including: stage combat, woodworking, community singing, improv, script writing, podcasting, and more.

Advisory
Every day, students take part in their Advisory, a small, multi-grade cohort of students who meet with the same Advisor through all four years of their time at Central Sands. Each day of the week, Advisory has a different focus that helps to build social, emotional, and personal learning skills. On Mondays, we plan for the week ahead, setting goals and journaling. Tuesdays are dedicated to learning and practicing mindfulness. We get to know each other as an Advisory when we talk through a series of questions in restorative circles each Wednesday. Thursdays are dedicated to learning about sustainability on a personal, local, and global level. And the week wouldn't be complete without Fun Friday, when we honor the importance of playing games and having fun together as a school community. These daily advisory sessions help to build the "soft skills" that everyone needs to succeed and thrive in life.
Math & ELA
Students work independently in math courses for an hour each day with the support and guidance of their teachers. We utilize both ALEKS Math and Kahn Academy as options for our students, depending on which works best for their needs. Students work at their own pace to complete their math requirements. Students who wish to accelerate their learning in math also have the option to take courses through Mid-State Technical College and UW Stevens Point.
