Travel Opportunities

At Central Sands we believe that one of the best ways to learn is through the experience of travel. We hold field trips throughout the year as part of our regular curriculum, but we also take a yearly summer school trip each June, where we spend a week traveling farther from home. Summer school trips to date have included: Duluth, Massachusetts, and The Porcupine Mountains. In 2026 we will take our first international trip to Costa Rica where we will learn about the ecology, geology, history, culture, and language of this region. We will also take part in service at a local elementary school.

Summer School Travel is open to students of any grade who wish to participate and are willing to help fundraise for the trip. We want travel to be accessible to all students, and we fundraise throughout the school year to make our trips affordable.

Massachusetts Trip 2024

June 8th-15th, 2024 students who are participating in the travel elective will be taking an expeditionary trip to Boston, Plymouth, Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard to learn about the rich history, culture, and ecological importance of this region.

The trip will allow students to earn credit in both Social Studies and Science, and in the preceding elective learn the history, culture and ecology of the places we will be visiting.

Throughout the year Travel Elective students will be fundraising in the community to cut down on overall trip expenses.

Historic Boston

Students will begin their trip by exploring historic Boston.

They will have the opportunity to roam Harvard Square (pictured right), seen Faneuiel Hall, walk the Freedom Trail, tour the city by trolley and much more!

Plymouth & Cape Cod

On the second leg of their MA journey, students will become immersed the history of Plymouth and visit various Cape Cod locales.

They will visit more historic sites such as the Plymouth Pautuxet Museum (pictured, left), Plymouth rock, and Provincetown among many others.

Participants will also have STEM based opportunities to learn about marsh ecology kayaking in the marshes of Scornton Creek and go whale watching at the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary.

Martha’s Vineyard & Oak Bluffs

Finally, Central Sands students will end their journey with a visit to Martha’s vineyard and Oak Bluffs.

Whilst here, students will rent bikes to traverse the island and take in the beautiful scenery. Trip attendants will also learn more about local history, such as that of the island’s deaf community.
